Public Works

The Public Works Department is located in Cahaba Heights (3579 East Street, 35243).  The facility is situated across the street from Rathmell Sports Park.  There are forty-three (43) employees working out of this location Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Mountain Brook’s Public Works Department is made up of several divisions:  Administrative Division, Right of Way and Traffic Division, Heavy Construction Division, Fleet Management Division, and Forestry Division. Together, these divisions work to preserve the historical beauty of the city.

SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS: Call 911 if you need help during a severe weather event. Report downed trees to 911. Public Works will remove the trees from the roads when safe to do so. 

ALABAMA POWER INFORMATION:

  • Report a Power Outage: Customers can call 1-800-888-2726 to report an outage. This line is available 24/7.
  • Residential Customer Service: Residential customers can call 1-800-245-2244 to report any issues with residential properties. This line is available Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Central.
  • Business Customer Service: Customers can call our Business Support line at 1-888-430-5787 to report any issues with businesses. This line is available Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Central.
  • Alabama Power Outage Maps: Customers may utilize our Outage Map and Outage Alert system to receive real-time information about outages in their area. More information can be found here: APC Outage Map

Another responsibility of the Public Works Department is to coordinate with the City’s refuse contractor (Amwaste - effective October 1, 2022) to ensure that proper services are provided to Mountain Brook residents and merchants. After careful evaluation, the City has finalized negotiations with AmWaste for twice weekly curbside garbage, trash and recycling pickup (once weekly commingled with garbage).  Each household will receive a 95 gallon cart. Residents that wish to receive backdoor garbage pickup may contract for such service for an additional fee of approximately $11.24 per month to be paid by residents directly to AmWaste quarterly in advance. The best way to report any need with Amwaste is to go to mtnbrook.org this is our home page. Scroll to the bottom and click the Amwaste truck. Note: If this is to report a miss trash and garbage pick-up, the hours of Amwaste operations run from 6:00am to 7:00pm. Please don't report as a miss until after 7:00pm.

 

Leaf Collections start on the first of November with Mountain Brook Public Works  handling collections. For Information regarding collections click the tab labeled Waste and Leaf Pick Up Schedules in the menu. Scroll to the bottom of this page to find several tabs with all information regarding leaf collection operations. Important: Please make sure that piles are free of other debris such as limbs, construction materials and rocks. These items will cause destruction of equipment. When these items are noticeably present piles will not be collected. Breakdowns will cause crews to get off schedule. Issues can be reported to the Action Center on the City Managers page or call Public Works Main Line  205-802-2390. Operation hours 6:00am-4:30pm. Messages should have the following information: name, address, return number, and issue being reported.
