Public Works Department

General Information

The City's Public Works Department is located in Cahaba Heights at the site of the old City Landfill.  Approximately thirty-seven employees work to maintain and update the storm drainage system, traffic control signs and signals, City roadways, and City rights-of-way.  The City garage is also located at the Public Works facility.   This garage maintains all City vehicles.

In addition to its daily duties, the department is responsible for clearing
streets that are blocked as a result of inclement weather.  Additionally,
the department is on call twenty-four hours a day to provide emergency services.  The department also performs mosquito spraying within the City limits to provide a healthier living environment for residents.

Another major responsibility of this department is to coordinate with the City's garbage contractor to ensure proper service to residents.  Garbage, trash, and recycling services are provided once a week for residents of the City.

Garbage, Trash and Recycling

Household garbage is collected at the back door of residences and, while not mandatory, the use of plastic liner bags in your garbage is strongly recommended.  Garbage cans should be easily visible and located outside fences, garages, basements and similar enclosures.

Trash is collected from the curb once a week on the same day as garbage collection except for large trash piles which require pick-up by knuckleboom trucks.  Items such as rocks, dirt or large  accumulation of debris resulting from wholesale cleaning or clearing of a lot or debris generated by a contractor or yard service must be disposed of by the homeowner or person or firm performing the work.

Recycling materials are collected from the curb once a week on the same day as garbage and trash service.  Items that can be recycled include newspaper, aluminum, steel and other metal cans, No.1 through 7 plastic containers, HDPE clear plastic milk jugs, PET plastic soft drink containers, cardboard, cardboard boxes, and household and office paper products.  Residents are not required to remove labels from containers placed in the recycling bins; however, caps should be removed from containers and containers should be rinsed out.
