Personnel
The Mountain Brook Police Department has 53 sworn positions supported by 15 civilian employees. These personnel are assigned to various divisions within the Department.
Having joined the department in 1976, Chief Johnny E. Stanley was named Acting Chief in 2001 and promoted officially in 2003. He has worked constantly with his personnel to adjust operations as needed to provide law enforcement services in the 21st century. He has succeeded in this endeavor by promoting professionalism and leadership in the day to day activities of the Department and through interaction with various other agencies and organizations.
Deputy Chief Clay Gilmore joined the police department in 1975. He is a graduate of Samford University, Jefferson State Junior College and the 170th Session of the FBI National Academy. He provides support for the Chief as well as leadership for the various divisions. He is also responsible for the day to day operations of the organization.
The Administrative Division, commanded by Lieutenant Greg Hagood, provides numerous support functions for the other divisions. These functions include records, communications, training coordination, clerical support and computer services.
The Detective Division, commanded by Lieutenant Jim Cole, is the main investigative branch of the Department. While patrol officers are encouraged to investigate the cases they encounter whenever possible, sometimes the case becomes too geographically widespread or time-consuming for a beat officer to deal with. This is where the Detective Division steps in. The detectives are responsible for the investigation and follow-up of all reported crimes occurring within the City of Mountain Brook. In addition, the Juvenile Officer, School Resource Officer and Evidence/Property Unit are also included in this division.
The Patrol Division, is commanded by Lieutenant Wayne Pittman, a graduate of Samford University and the 201st Session of the FBI National Academy. The Patrol Division is the largest of the three divisions and the first responders of the Department. This division has officers assigned to proactively patrol the community to deter and detect crime and to be available to assist citizens whenever the need arises. The Motorcycle Unit, Parking Control Officer, Animal Control Officer, Tactical Team and all jail operations are staffed and operated from this division.
Three members of the Department in leadership positions have graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Only one-half per cent of police officers in the United States ever have an opportunity to participate in this intense, prestigious curriculum. In addition, several supervisors are graduates of the FBI Southeastern Law Enforcement Executive Development Program that provides management, leadership and media relations training to mid-level managers. |
