Highway 280 Alternative Plans

The City of Mountain Brook hired Hatch, Mott, and McDonald to develop plans for addressing traffic on Highway 280 and as an alternative to an elevated roadway on Highway 280 through Mountain Brook.

A public hearing on these plans was held on September 16th. Copies of the proposed plans are posted for public review in the Council Room at Mountain Brook City Hall.

Below is an explanation of the conceptual design plans proposed by Hatch, Mott and McDonald for the four (4) mile stretch of US 280 from Hollywood Boulevard to I-495.

1.) Remove the traffic signals from the main highway.

2.) Instead of traveling through signalized intersections, traffic on US 280 would continue across existing intersections via proposed overpass bridges.

3.) Side roads and driveways along US 280 would then be accessed by one-way service (collector/distributor) roads which would run parallel to US 280.

4.) Access to the services roads would be provided via slip ramps from US 280. In conditions where US 280 would be located on overpass embankments, the service roads would be grade separated from US 280 using Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls (MSE Walls.)

5.) Minimize the amount of required Right-of-Way for this project.

The proposed improvements would improve traffic conditions along the US 280 corridor by eliminating delays caused by traffic queuing at the existing, closely-spaced signalized intersections.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.  This plan will be submitted to the Alabama Department of Transportation for their consideration.
