The third Tuesday in July is the last day candidates may qualify for municipal office. The statement of candidacy and the $50 qualification fee must be filed with the City Clerk by 5:00 p.m. Forms are available from the City Clerk. §11-46-25(g). |

Last day for a resident to register as a qualified elector for the August 24, 2010 general municipal election. §17-3-50(a). Contact the Jefferson County Board of Registrars at 325-5550 for voter registration information. |

| August 19 |
Last day for a voter to apply for a regular absentee ballot. §17-11-4. |
|
|
| August 23 |
Last day for a voter to apply for an emergency absentee ballot if they are required by their employer to be out of the county on election day. §17-11-3(d).
Absentee ballots must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the City Clerk by 5:00 p.m. on the day before the election. §17-11-18. |

| August 24 |
Municipal elections are held on the fourth Tuesday in August. §11-46-21(a).
Absentee ballots mailed to the City must be received by the City Clerk by 12:00 noon in order to be counted. Beginning at 12:00 noon, absentee ballots shall be examined and placed, unopened in a sealed ballot box. Absentee ballots shall be counted upon the closing of the polls. §17-11-10(b). |

| August 31 |
The City Council must canvass the election results before 12:00 noon. §11-46-55(a). If a candidate receives a majority of the votes cast for the office, the Council issues a certificate of election. Otherwise, a run-off election shall be held. §11-46-46 and 55. Anyone with standing to contest the election may request a recount within forty-eight (48) hours of the official canvass of the election results. |

Last day a candidate may contest the results of the general election. Any such contest must commence within five (5) days after the result of the election is declared. §11-46-69(b). |
